Club Deportivo PeГ±a Getafe (originally named PeГ±a Madridista Getafe - a Real Madrid supporters club) and Club Getafe Promesas merged in 1982 and the new club - Getafe Club de FГєtbol - was officially formed the following year and launched in the Spanish regional leagues. An earlier club in the Getafe area - Club Getafe Deportivo - had played in the regional leagues since the 1940s, reaching as high as the 3rd division before going bankrupt in 1982. Getafe is a southern suburb of Madrid.The club's logo mirrors that of the city of Getafe. Geta is simply a shortening of Getafe while Azulones is like "The Big Blue". LeganГ©s are their traditional rivals although as Getafe have climbed the ladder of Spanish football LeganГ©s are less and less of a rival.
