The Sociedad de FГєtbol was founded on September 17, 1909 by ex-members of San Sebastian Football Club. This group had entered (and won) the Copa del Rey that year under the name Club Ciclista de San Sebastian. Although this was before the official formation of the new club, this title is often listed as one of Real Sociedad's. In 1910 Sociedad de FГєtbol was granted royal status by the Spanish king Alfonso XIII and the current name was adopted. San Sebastian is known as Donostia in the Basque language and, at the advent of the Spanish Civil War and a briefly independent Basque Country, the Donostia name was adopted. After the end of the Civil War the club returned to the Real Sociedad name, which fully translates as Royal Football Society. The nicknames Erreala (Real) and Txuri-urdin (The Blue and White) are in Basque. The Real Sociedad emblem includes an old-style football, a crown symbolizing their Royal patronage and a blue and white flag with SS for San Sebastian in the center. The Txuri-urdin fielded only Basque players until 1989 and were part of the 1928 foundation of La Liga.
