Details and History:Foot-Ball Club Bari was launched on January 15, 1908 by a group of (primarily foreign) football enthusiasts. Red and white were the club's chosen colors from the start and early matches were played at the Campo San Lorenzo. A year after the club's launch a group of dissidents broke away to form another local club, Foot Ball Club Liberty. A third local club, Unione Sportiva Ideale also got its start around this time.
All three clubs competed in the regional championships that began in the 1920s before the start of a series of mergers that culminated in one major club for the entire city. The first merger in 1927 reunited FBC Bari and FBC Liberty under the FBC Bari name while one year later FBC Bari and US Ideale merged to create Unione Sportiva Bari. In 1931 US Bari won promotion and made their debut in Серия А.
US Bari ceased organized competition during World War II and then re-formed in 1945 under the name Associazione Sportiva Bari, the name they use to this day. Two years later they finished 7th in Серия А, their best-ever finish. But just five years later AS Bari were in the fourth division after being relegated three successive seasons from 1950 to 1952. Within six years the Galletti were back in the top division. The ensuing years have seen many ups and many downs and Bari currently hold the record (tied with Atalanta) for the most promotions to Серия А.
In 1990 Bari moved to the brand-new Stadio San Nicola, built on the outskirts of the city for the 1990 World Cup. Colors and Logo:Bari's official emblem symbolizes the club mascot - the rooster. A vote was held in 1929 to determine the club mascot. The other option in the vote was the Robin.
AS Bari's red and white colors are those of the city of Bari. Previous Logo:
Nicknames:Bari have two principal nicknames - the Galletti (the Roosters) and the biancorossi (the White and Red). Bari have been known as the Galletti since a vote to choose a mascot in 1929. The biancorossi nickname references their red and white colors. Rivals:Bari's principal rival are fellow Puglia club Lecce, a match known as the Derby di Puglia. The all-time results in the series are incredibly balanced - 21 wins for Bari, 20 for Lecce and 21 ties. |
