They emerged from the ashes of Wigan Borough, who resigned from the Football League in 1931. The Latics' league history before joining the Football League is as follows: Cheshire County League (1932-47), Lancashire Combination (1947-60), Cheshire County League (1960-67), Northern Premier League (1967-78). In 1978 Wigan Athletic were elected to the Football League. Latics is a pun on Athletic. The club's emblem is based on that of the city of Wigan. Sports business magnate Dave Whelan is a major backer of the club. After many years of non-league and lower division football his investment in the club has pushed them into the Premier League, a major achievement for a club from a rugby hotbed. DW Stadium:The stadium is named for DWSportsfitness, a fitness club chain based in Wigan owned by Wigan Athletic backer Dave Whelan. The stadium previously bore the name JJB Sports after Whelan's former sporting goods chain JJB Sports.
