Description:
What we call the Global region includes football in Africa, Asia and Oceania. We hope to one day have enough coverage of each region to separate it out but for now they're thrown into a big and rather interesting pot.
African football continues to produce footballers of a very high quality who can be found in virtually every league and team across Europe. Unfortunately that has not really filtered back to the domestic game on the continent which is often of a low quality and acts only as a feeder to European leagues. Disorganization is sadly rampant though the return of top-tier players from Europe used to professional setups may begin to gradually change this as they become involved in the administration of the game. The African Champions League and the Confederations Cup are the primary club tournaments while the African Nations Cup (held every two years) is the main tournament for national teams.
Football in Asia has improved dramatically over the last 10-20 years, with Japan and South Korea co-hosting the 2002 World Cup host and South Korea reaching the semifinal. The professional game in Japan, Korea and several countries in the Middle East is at a very high standard. Additionally Australia have recently made the move from Oceania to Asia, which brings more competitive matches to both sides. Asian clubs compete in the Asian Champions League while national teams contest the Asian Cup.
The departure of Australia has certainly dealt a body blow to football in Oceania, with New Zealand the only country with anything close to a pedigree and even there it is at best the 3rd most popular sport. But the game does move along with the Oceania Champions League and Oceania Nations Cup regularly contested.
