Introduction:

The Football League Two is the fourth and lowest tier of full-time professional football in England, although a growing number of teams (now a majority) in the 5th tier Conference Premier (aka Blue Square Premier) are also full-time. Nonetheless League Two is the traditional divider between full-time professional "league football" and semi-professional part-time "non-league football". Crowds hover around the 3-4,000 per match match mark though the occasional large club (like Bradford City at the moment) floats through and draw considerably more.

History:

The Football League Fourth Division was created in the 1958-59 season by the merger of the previously separate Third Division North and Third Division South. After the formation of the breakaway Premier League in 1992 the name was changed to the Football League Third Division. It was renamed again before the 2004-05 season to Football League Two.

League Two Format:

• The League Two season begins in early August and runs through early Май, with no winter break. Matches are traditionally played on Saturday afternoons.
• The 24 teams play each othe twice (home and away) for a total of 46 games.
• 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 points for a loss.
• Final league position is based on the total number of points earned over the full season.
• The team with the most points is considered the league champion and is promoted to the 3rd tier League One along with the 2nd and 3rd placed team.
• The teams finishing 4th to 7th enter a playoff to determine one further team to be promoted.
• The bottom two teams are relegated to the 5th tier Blue Square Premier.
